  • Unhealthy diets, lack of exercise, obesity, smoking, and other lifestyle factors significantly increase the risk of developing CVD. Diet and lifestyle interventions are important for CVD prevention and management. 
  • Inflammation plays a key role in the development and progression of atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease. Pro-inflammatory markers like CRP, IL-6, TNF-α, etc. are involved. 
  • Western diets tend to cause higher inflammation compared to healthier diets like the Mediterranean diet, which is associated with lower levels of pro-inflammatory markers and higher levels of anti-inflammatory markers.

  • Fruits and vegetable intake is inversely associated with CRP and TNF-α levels and directly associated with γδ-T cell populations in a meta-analysis of 83 studies. Higher fresh fruit intake correlated with lower CRP in one study.
